Curriculum
Curriculum as it is defined from its early Latin origins means literally “to run a course.” Salem’s course of direction is mapped in specific Student Learning Goals, in a distinct Christian approach that sets Salem apart in pedagogy, implementation, and assessment.

At Salem, curriculum is more than just learning standards; it is a philosophy of engaging and educating the whole child wherever that child may be in their learning journey.  Training each child in Christian ethics, discernment, wisdom and knowledge, (Proverbs 22:6, Proverbs 3) and in an ability to see themselves in a global context of contribution and faith sharing (Matt. 28) is foundational to Salem’s curriculum.

Academic content is based, taught, and assessed on rigorous standards that incorporate both National and CA standards with a strong focus on 21st century technology skills.  Salem’s most recent accreditation report noted:

Salem Lutheran School uses a variety of measurement tools to assess student’s performance.  Student data from grades, portfolios, standardized testing, developmental testing in the early grades, coupled with analysis from previous years’ teachers, the resource teacher and independent testing, allows for early intervention so that the instructional program can be refined to meet the learners needs.”

“Salem Lutheran administers the Iowa Test of Basic Standards to grades first through eighth as an indicator of school performance. These scores are based on student grade equivalency and on National Percentile Averages. These results provide another tool in helping measure the effectiveness of the school’s curriculum and Student Learning Goals. The primary grades average at least one grade level above, the intermediate grades averages well above two grades levels, and the junior high averages three to four grade levels above the national average of students taking the test.  Salem Lutheran’s rigorous curriculum competently prepares their students for enrollment into the local academically strong high schools."

"The strength of Salem Lutheran School is the hard working and dedicated staff. Each teacher conveys a personal strong Christian commitment throughout their day.  The members of Salem’s staff are dedicated to high standards to establish a sense of community in their classroom and with their peers that also allows for dialogue about the curriculum and needs of all learners. The staff has a high rate of retention that allows for stability and promotes a high trust level with parents resulting in strong matriculation in enrollment, cooperative working relationships with families and improved student learning."
