General Description The governing and policy-making body of Salem Lutheran School is the Board of Education. This board determines all general policies for the school. Members and Membership The Board of Education consists of a chairperson, secretary, and four (4) additional voting members. The Principal is an ex-officio non-voting advisory member of the Board. Chairperson: The Chairperson of the Board of Education is appointed by the Ministry Leadership Council in accordance with the Constitutional bylaws of Salem Lutheran Church. It is a requirement that before becoming elected as chairperson, this individual has been a member of the Board of Education for two years. The chairperson of the Board serves for a two year term and may serve a second term. Following this term he/she may serve in an advisory role at the invitation of the Board. Board members: A secretary and four Board members shall be appointed by the Chairperson, following prayerful consideration and discussion with the Principal. Employees of the Church and School are not eligible to serve on the Board of Education. Qualifications: Each Board member shall: • Be a voting member of Salem Lutheran Church • participate regularly in congregational activities • demonstrate strong interest in Christian education • possess varied competencies to serve in this capacity • show interest in leadership Request for Action/Audience with the Board A request for action to the Board of Education shall be made in writing to the Principal to present to the Board of Education at the next regularly scheduled meeting and shall contain the following: • An outline of the situation affected by policy or need for new policy • Suggested solution • An alternative suggestion The Board will respond to the requester through the Principal.
